During the week starting 18 July 2005 we had 22, 822 hits on this website and I am actively submitting information to Google and other Search Engines.
Please pass the word around to everyone.

Interesting stats, Seb. A no-duff question: These hits that we see recorded as views by the various topics - are they by registered users, only I don't see twenty odd thousand? _________________ Give me good food with a fine wine and a bad girl! |

Tony,
The hits are how many times any visitor reads or refreshes a single page on the website. As the pages on the forums are delivered as normal web pages each forum page gives one hit every time it is viewed.
The full stats for that particular week are 22,822 hits delivering 126,595,183 bytes (or 126.5 megabytes or the equivelent of 87.8 floppy disks) to 1,910 separate visitors.
Visitors came from 321 distinct Internet addresses.
The longest visit lasted for 67 minutes and the shortest 1.27 minutes.
The busiest time during that week was between 16:00 and 17:00 hrs when we averaged 14 visitors.
The average number of navigational steps per visit was 14.7.
The top visitor to the website has an IP address of 21*.*.2*.202 and visited 114 times during the week in question. Naturally I have cammed up my own IP address!
Basically, if I want to know who has visited and what they looked at I just need to spent a few hours looking at the site statistics. What is more important to me is understanding who visits and arguably what they find interesting. Then I can adapt the website to cater for the majority of visitors. Sometimes I get it right and sometimes not as right as I would like. Then I resort to questionnaires, cold canvassing, and good old cyber psychology.
Have fun.
Regards

For those who want to have an insight into what I have written above try this:
In Windows XP - click on Start, Run, type cmd and tap enter, type ipconfig and tap enter. If you get lucky you will see your IP address. However when you access the Internet you will probably have an IP address allocated to you by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) eg BT.
Now let's see the Webserver of this site (in America) demonstrate how it records and displays a hit on a webpage.
1. Go to the forums area of the website.
2. Go into the Website Updates forum and notice how many views Website Statistics has.
3. Go into Website Statistics and click the refresh button (two circular arrows if you are in MS Explorer).
4. Go back to the Website Statistics area and notice that the Views number has increased by however many times you have clicked the refresh button.
Now the sneaky bit. You would think that you can hack the questionnaires that I sometimes put on the forum by doing a similar trick. But guess what, the server knows your IP address and only lets you vote once! Even when you come back next time it knows who you are and won't let you cheat.
Anyway, I am off to allocate some of our new registered users suitable avatars. O' the joy of being a webby.
Regards

A lot of information there, Seb. I guess this is your baby. :)
I was thinking of views, as shown, as hits. Sorry, but i'm a bit simple, and so I try to keep it that way. However, when I am a little more mentally alert I'll re-read what you have written.
aye

Seb. By my observations, it doesn't matter much about the subject tile that attracts viewers,. It seems to be more about postings. The more postings there are the more they are looked at - let's have a vote :)

Tony,
You need to know that I have no easy way of separating out the website hits from the forum hits. However, a cursory scan of the forums will give you an idea of what is being read and what is being responded to.
What I am particularly interested in is how to develop the website (and the forums) to make them more interesting and useful to the whole Regimental Family. We also need those who use the site already to get other Family Members to visit and if possible register so that we have a database of interested people and can email them a couple of times a year to sustain their interest.
I suspect that a two pronged approach of creating interest and advertising our presence will drive up the hits dramatically but the hit count is not the aim, it is merely a performance indicator.
You will remember that one of my reasons for setting up the website was that I believe that come the amalgamation the MOD will pull the plug on www.korbr.com and the paid for advertising on search engines like Google and the cyber presence of the Regiment will be left to this website, and a few others like the Sgts Mess one.
It is therefore imperative that we do our advertising/ recruiting/ encouraging etc. now as it will be much harder further down the line. And heavens knows how much history, stories, photos, etc. will disappear from public access when that happens.
I have a cunning plan for ensuring the sustainability of this website but I can't say the same for the half dozen or so other KORBR websites which seem to come and go in cyberspace.
If you or any of the other cyber warriors want to setup any questionnaires just give me a private email and I will see what I can do.
Regards

In other news, president bush anounced that he's contracted a new power to help in the fight against terrorism. Officials in transylvania have confirmed that Count Dracula will be joining coilition forces in the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. In a news confrence this morning GW offered a bold challenge to all who practice terror:
"We'll hunt ya down using any means necessary. If that means tactical supernatural weapons then so be it. If we dont get em, old Draco here will, thats for dam sure."
